Certified Body Control Pilates Instructor and Lead Pilates Instructor at Causeway Pilates
Why I became a Pilates Instructor
Having been a primary school teacher for 10 years I decided after becoming a mummy of two beautiful children that full time teaching was no longer for me. Knowing the benefit of Pilates on my life, it was always something I was going to continue to do.
I loved Pilates and I loved teaching, so in April 2016, I made my first of many trips to London and started my training with Body Control Pilates, the start of my journey to becoming a Pilates Instructor.
I suffered from ongoing and painful postural related neck and shoulder problems and was recommended Pilates by my husband and physio Colin (Colin Coleman @ Causeway Physio). It wasn’t long after starting that I found I wasn’t experiencing the same daily pain in my upper back and neck and really started to feel a change in my posture in sitting and standing.
My life really changed through Pilates after my second child. I was experiencing ongoing pelvic pain and pelvic instability which had become more severe after my second pregnancy. The pain got to the point I couldn’t walk more than 100m without being in tears. As a mum with two kids dependent on my help I just felt helpless as I could hardly push a pram. I had been ignoring my pain up to that point but something had to change. Through 1:1 Pilates rehabilitation I was surprised how quickly I was able feel changes in my pelvic pain and how far I could walk. Every week I became stronger and able to do more. After 6-8 weeks of regular daily exercises (it didn’t take that long I just had to set aside 10-15 minutes and take some ‘Me Time’) my pain was 90% gone and I could do everything I wanted to.
After a while I realised that the key to looking after my low back and pelvis was to ensure that was fit enough and flexible enough to cope with daily demands of being a mum! From then I started regular classes again and simply made it part of my weekly routine.
I have now been doing Pilates for over 10 years and have overcome each of these problems by strengthening and conditioning my body, core and posture. It has made a huge difference to my life, leading to me becoming a Pilates Instructor and I cannot recommend Pilates enough for everyone!
Why Body Control Pilates®?
Body Control Pilates is widely seen as a benchmark for safe and effective teaching of the highest quality. It was most comprehensive training I could find that placed equal emphasis on Pilates theory, anatomy, practical skills and client assessment. My training was thorough and as well as written exams, essays and teaching assessments; it included a long period of supervised teaching from the most qualified teachers in London & Northern Ireland where I got to observe, absorb and team teach before I was considered skilled enough to apply to take my final practical exam and become a Pilates Instructor. Only once I became a fully Certified Body Control Pilates Instructor, was I allowed to start teaching for myself! I completed my qualification as a Body Control Pilates Instructor in January 2017 and haven’t looked back since!!
